The Story Of The Frog-XT

DESIGN IS A JOURNEY AND THE FROG-XT HAS BEEN ONE TO INCREASE SAFETY, ENHANCE PERFORMANCE AND CREATE A BETTER CLIENT EXPERIENCE.

The first FROG was launched in 1998 and in the time since, there has been a huge amount of growth and changes both in the marine transfer sector and within Reflex Marine. All of the knowledge and learnings accumulated through our client support, training and operations and partnerships have allowed our Engineering team to improve in all aspects of capsule design to create the FROG-XT; our best product range yet.

From inception to delivery, the development of FROG-XT has been a process that has taken 36 months; 18 months in high-value, concept and design and 18 months engineering, testing and verification.

TESTING & VERIFICATION

The FROG-XT range has undergone the most rigorous development, testing and verification programme in Reflex Marine history to ensure their designs are fully optimised to protect passengers from all the key risks associated with marine personnel transfer.

Early verification were conducted on the FROG-XT with full scale modelling. Seating designs and spatial layouts were modelled in conjunction with automotive consultants to provide the best possible ergonomic fit for the offshore workforce.

Testing the performance of the FROG-XT has been conducted in both prototype and production type units and has involved:

  • EC conformity assessment performed by TÜV SÜD
  • Development
    • Prototype testing of ergonomics
  • Full-scale immersion and self-righting tests
  • Full-scale impact testing
    • Vertical impact testing
    • Horizontal impact testing
    • Test data acquired using accelerometers and high speed photography
  • Built to ISO9001:2000 standards

PRODUCT DESIGN

Reflex Marine has now amassed over 20 years of experience in offshore personnel transfer and whilst the underlying design methodology for our new product follows the same, proven, fundamental tenets as the existing FROG; all of the client feedback received, training and operational experience gained, and designs generated for our wish-list have gone into consideration in the development of the FROG-XT range.

The concepts generated and ideas explored by our Product Design team were rigorously  evaluated and optimised in conjunction with our highly skilled and experienced Engineering team, ensuring all aspects of the capsule are to the high standards expected of us by our customers, but more importantly, of ourselves.

THE FROG AND FROG-XT RANGES HAVE BUILT UP AN EXTENSIVE TRACK RECORD OVER THE LAST 20 YEARS

Our exhaustive programme of research, development and verification has given market-leading clients the confidence to depend on the FROG all over the world. The FROG has been in honourable service for 20 years and there are now 450 devices in operation worldwide with over a million passenger transfers taking place each year. BP Indonesia, for example, use 12 FROG-3 units to transfer over 120,000 passengers per year. It is safe to say, the FROG has changed the way the industry views personnel transfers.

With a proven track record in demanding environments from the Tropics to the Arctic, the FROG has demonstrated its reliability in challenging sea states and extreme weather conditions. The launch of the FROG-XT; a product range built on all the success and learnings from the FROG, has resulted in a more durable product with an increased operating envelope.

DURING THE WINTER SEASON, WE HAD TO DO A LOT OF TRANSFERS IN EXTREME COLD CONDITIONS. IN THE PAST WE HAD TO HANG ON FOR DEAR LIFE WHILE THE CRANE LOWERED US 120 FT TO THE DECK OF THE MSV. WITH FROZEN FINGERS, THIS WAS A DANGEROUS TASK. WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF THE FROG, THIS IS A MUCH SAFER TRANSFER METHOD AS THE PASSENGERS ARE SECURE WITHOUT HAVING TO HANG ON! ROUTINE TRANSFERS

The FROG-XT is an excellent operational tool where crane operations are the dominant method of crew transfer. Its many enhanced design features means the FROG-XT protects passengers from all the key risks associated with marine personnel transfer and therefore provides crew with a safe and comfortable journey both to and from the installation.

The greater operating envelope of the FROG-XT means that the device can operate in significant wave heights of up to 4m. Also offering stretcher-carrying capabilities, the FROG-XT is a versatile device delivering both value and comprehensive safety to your crew transfer operations.

The smaller footprint of the FROG-XT4 compared with its predecessor, the FROG-3, results in less deck space required for both storage and landing. Ease of visual inspection speeds up operations and helps ensure integrity of the device whilst ease of maintenance provides an enhanced ownership experience.

CONTINGENCY TRANSFERS

The FROG-XT is also suited to operations where crane transfers are not the primary method for moving crews. The device provides an excellent back-up if you need to move people when helicopters can’t fly such as for inter-field transfers, low volume crew changes or if emergency down-manning needs to be carried out.

The use of helicopters can be ruled out at any time due to unpredictable circumstances such as climatic events (e.g. fog or volcanic ash as experienced in 2010 with the eruption of the Icelandic volcano) or when an accident results in helicopters being grounded for an unknown period of time.

Planning in advance and having a secondary method of crew transfer means that you are prepared in the event of any of these scenarios. The smaller footprint of the FROG-XT means that less deck space is required for the storage of your backup device.

MEDEVAC

Many injuries such as on the arms or hands or when personnel are very ill would prevent the use of a rope basket transfer. The ability to accommodate a stretcher makes the FROG-XT the ideal method for the rapid transfer of sick or injured personnel. The devices also provide improved protection of seated casualties with design features protecting from all the key risks of marine personnel transfer.

The way the MedEvac facility is designed with a seat folding mechanism and four secure attachment points means that the FROG-XT be quickly converted into MedEvac mode. This takes just two minutes with only a spanner and allen key required. The new design also means that the buoyancy panels no longer need to be removed to accommodate the stretcher. These features allow for the rapid transfer of injured personnel and means that you no longer need to make the choice to store the device in MedEvac mode.

The seating arrangement of the FROG-XT also allows for a seated passenger or medic to support the injured person during the transfer. The FROG-XT10 can accommodate two stretchers with two seated passengers. Passengers will also benefit from all the advanced passenger protection features that the FROG-XT offers. In the very unlikely event that the device becomes immersed in water, the stretcher will remain above the waterline meaning both the injured person and the accompanying passenger can safely await rescue.

HIGH VOLUME TRANSFERS

For carrying out regular crew transfers with a high volume of passengers the FROG-XT10 could be the answer for your operations. The FROG-XT10 provides excellent transfer rates whilst maintaining the high levels of protection users expect from a FROG. A suitable vessel with sufficient deck space is a very important element to have in place when using the FROG-XT10.

A suitable vessel can dramatically improve the safety and efficiency of crew transfers - especially when dealing with high passenger volumes.  Seacor's CrewZer vessels are a good example and when paired with our high volume crane transfer device, provides state of the art crew transfer capabilities.
